According to different carbon content, ferrochrome is divided into high carbon ferrochrome (carbon content is 4~8%), medium carbon ferrochrome (carbon content is 0.5~4%), low carbon ferrochrome (carbon content is 0.15~0.5{{10}}%), micro-carbon ferrochrome (carbon content is 0.06%), ultra-carbon ferrochrome (carbon content is less than 0.03%), and silicon chromium alloy, ferrochrome nitride, etc.

There are three most useful chromium spinel minerals: magnesium chromite (Mg, Fe)Cr2O4, hard chromite spinel (Mg, Fe)(Cr, Al)2O4 and aluminum chromite Fe(Cr, Al)2O4. The largest user of chromium ore is the ferroalloy industry, which accounts for about 80% of the total production of chromium ore. It is called metallurgical grade chromium ore in the chrome ore market. High-quality metallurgical grade chromium ore requires Cr2O3>48%, S<0.1%, P<0.1%, Cr2O3: FeO>3 to produce ferrochrome containing Cr>70%. Due to the dedecreasesing of chrome-rich ore, the ore with low chrome-iron ratio is relatively increasing . They can only be used to smelt charge grade ferrochrome.
